NetID for new students

horizontal rule

Greetings from the Technology & Media Production department at the Eastman School of Music! This message is about an essential part of your upcoming life at Eastman; your NetID.

What is a NetID?

Your NetID is your online "identity" at the Eastman School of Music and the University of Rochester. It is made up of a username assigned to you and a password that you select.

What do I use my NetID for?

Your NetID is used to access a variety of online resources. You will use it most often to access your University email account. Your email address name will be the same as your NetID. For example; if your email address is jdoe4@mail.rochester.edu, then your NetID is “jdoe4”. Official communications from the School will be sent to your University email address so it will be very important for you to check it regularly even if you have an email account elsewhere. Your NetID is also used to register online for classes, on the River Campus NetID is used to access the URWireless network. Students moving in to Eastman Commons will need their NetID to register their computers on the building’s network, known as “ResNet.” In the future, additional services will use the NetID as your online "ID."

How do I set up my NetID?

UIT (University Information Technology), the University department that runs the NetID and email systems, has created a web site for activating your account: https://mail.rochester.edu/eservices

Please be aware that the University plans to transition all existing student emails to a new student email server later in the summer of 2008. Details about the new server are found here.

You will need the University Student ID number included in your acceptance letter from the Eastman Admissions Office. If you cannot find that number please call the Registrar’s Office at 585.274.1220 and they will be able to provide it to you after verifying your identity.

When you have finished setting up your NetID, you can test it by logging in to your University email account through the Webmail site:
https://mail.rochester.edu. You will start receiving mail at this address soon, so it’s important to check it regularly.

What do I do if I have problems with my NetID?

ITS will have staff in the Internet Cafe on the first day of orientation, Monday August 25th, to take care of any NetID problems. On other days and throughout the school-year, if you have password problems you can visit the Eastman Computing Services office to have your password reset. The office is room ESM 35, inside the Cafe, next to the vending machines. Questions or problems not related to your password should be directed to the UIT Center at 585.275.2000 or at problem@mail.rochester.edu.
