A native of Eastern Canada, Robert Kwan has lived most of his life in the country's westernmost province, British Columbia. His formal musical training began at age five with piano lessons. His interest in the organ emerged at age sixteen and shortly thereafter he assumed the position of organist at a local parish. In 1996, while continuing his organ studies, he completed the requirements for the Associate of the Royal Conservatory of Toronto Teacher’s Diploma.

In 1996, intent on pursuing a career in music education, Robert entered the University of Victoria School of Music with trombone as his major instrument, minoring in organ. Halfway through his first year, he was offered an organ scholarship at a downtown Victoria parish church with a reputation for producing fine choirs and church music.  His primary focus shifted in this post from trombone and education to organ and church music. Having earned an Associate’s Diploma from the Royal Canadian College of Organists in 1999 and graduated from the University of Victoria with a Bachelor of Music in 2000, Robert undertook the challenge of the one-year organ scholarship at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, England.  In the fall of 2001 he commenced graduate studies at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. Having completed the Master of Music degree in 2003 and Sacred Music Diploma in 2006, he is continuing his studies at Eastman as a candidate for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts, where he studies organ with David Higgs and voice, through the Eastman Community Music School, with Derrick Smith.
