Harmonium Seminar

The harmonium has a tradition in the middle 19th century that is linked to the organ, particularly in France and Germany. Composers such as Franck, Guilmant, Vierne and Karg-Elert wrote extensively for the instrument and a knowledge of the sound and expressive capabilities of the instrument is important in order to understand their works for the organ.

The French harmonium includes the capability to control the belows directly with the feet. This increases the expressive possibilities of the music, allowing for powerful crescendos and delicate diminuendos. This control comes at a price: it is very difficult to master the technique. Jan Börjesson treated us to several wonderful examples of music for the harmonium and then offered the chance to try out the instrument.
