Student Gmail at UR and Eastman

Dear Students,
We are writing with important news about email services at the University of Rochester. The University has contracted with Google to use Gmail for email services for the undergraduate student body on the River Campus as well as for all students at Eastman. Although we are aware that some new students have recently established a non-Gmail University email account, we are particularly excited about this new service as Gmail offers enhanced features including labels, calendars and chat. We are pleased that the University of Rochester-branded Gmail service is without advertising.
To use this new service, students must activate their accounts. Student email addresses will be in the format of firstname.lastname@rochester.edu . That means, regardless of the length of your name, the whole name will appear correctly. (Example: john.smith@rochester.edu). Mail stored in old mail.rochester.edu email accounts will be converted and mail sent to those accounts will be forwarded to the new Gmail account.
You will be receiving a postcard in the mail which will provide further information with more details about the new service. You can also get additional information at: www.rochester.edu/its/urgmail.
The conversion process will require that current systems be inactive for a short period of time. The schedule of downtime is as follows:
River Campus:
Seniors (2009) – July 21 & 22
Juniors (2010) – July 23 & 24
Sophomores (2011) – July 25 & 26
Freshmen (2012) – August 3-5
Eastman:
All students – July 28 and 29
We know how important email is to students and are pleased to provide the latest technology and services to the University of Rochester student community. We hope you are having a great summer and look forward to seeing you in the fall.
Sincerely,
Richard Feldman
Dean of the College
Douglas Lowry
Dean, Eastman School of Music
