About
Dariusz Terefenko. . . BA – Music Performance, University of Toronto; MA - Jazz Performance and Contemporary Media, Eastman School of Music; Ph.D – Music Theory, Eastman School of Music. His dissertation Keith Jarrett’s Transformation of Standard Tunes combines Common-Practice music theory with jazz practice and demonstrates the extent to which Jarrett’s renditions of standard tunes exploit certain aspects of the phrase and formal structure of the original and/or their lead sheet versions. His codification of standard tunes according to various phrase and formal categories has proven effective in teaching jazz repertory. At Eastman he teaches in both departments: Jazz and Contemporary Media, and Music Theory; his duties include: Jazz History, Jazz Theory for Non-Majors, Jazz Performance Workshops, Intro to Tonal Improvisation, and Keyboard Skills. He has been the recipient of several jazz performance grants from the Canadian Council for Performing Arts (1996-1999). As a pianist, he has performed solo recitals at prestigious festivals in Poland and Canada demonstrating the historical development of jazz piano. As a clinician/lecturer, he has delivered a number of papers and conducted jazz clinics at leading universities in Poland.
