Competition Guidelines:
1. Eligibility: the competition is open to violists of all nationalities who are between the ages of 16-22 on the day of the live round of the competition (June 2, 2012).
2. Application Procedure:
- Application information and video recordings must be submitted and uploaded to Citizen Groove by 11:59 PM EST on December 1, 2011. The application fee must also be paid by this date.
- The recorded round video must include one movement of the solo Bach suite and the first movement of the chosen Sonata from the Competition repertoire list (see below).
- Applications who have been advanced to the live round will be notified of their status in late January 2012.
3. Full Competition Repertoire:
- Two contrasting movements from one of the six Bach Cello Suites
- One of the following complete sonatas: Brahms Op. 120, no. 1 in F Minor, or Op. 120, no. 2 in Eb Major, or Schubert “Arpeggione” Sonata, D. 821
- 5-8 minute work (or single movement from a longer work) for unaccompanied viola of the applicant’s choice, from any time period
- A commissioned work by composer David Liptak will be performed by all applicants in the live round. Competitors selected for the live round can expect to receive the score for this work by January 31, 2012.
The Liptak commission has been made possible through the generosity of Stephen Lurie and Kathleen Holt.
4. Application fee: $25.00 USD
5. Travel and lodging costs in Rochester will be the responsibility of the contestants.
6. Accompanists will be provided by IVC 2012 for all competitors invited to the live round.
