PERFORMING AT EASTMAN

The Eastman School of Music presents more than 700 performances annually.  Some student recitals are required for the completion of degree programs; many simply happen because of the initiative of Eastman students.  All performances are open to the general public; most have no admission charge. Either low-cost or discounted tickets are always available for ticketed Eastman events.

The Kilbourn Concert Series, the Eastman-Ranlet Series and the Faculty Artist Series feature faculty and guest artists in solo recitals and chamber music performances.  There are also performances by faculty ensembles such as the Eastman Brass, a highly acclaimed touring and recording ensemble of five faculty artists; by the Eastman Jazz Quartet, an ensemble-in-residence that has performed locally and internationally; and by the Eastman Virtuosi, a faculty chamber ensemble that presents superb and varied programs of chamber and small ensemble music.

Non-Western music is highlighted in the fourth series of concerts, the World Music Series.  Recent concerts have featured music of India, Hungary, Tibet and performances by the Eastman Gamelan Lila Muni.  The School’s Eastman Community Music School coordinates a free lunchtime concert series of student and faculty performers at the downtown Unitarian Universalist church, and occasionally at noontime concerts at Rochester’s David Hochstein Memorial Music School.  Main Hall concerts initiated by students occur throughout the year.  One of these, the traditional Holiday Sing, takes place on the fall semester’s last day of class, and features students and faculty from across the School playing serious and not-so-serious seasonal selections.

While home to the Eastman School’s large ensembles, Eastman Theatre also is home to the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.  Students may purchase reduced-cost student tickets to select concerts during the week of the concert.  Information about selected concerts is available in the Student Life Office. Besides listening opportunities, the RPO has several Eastman faculty and alumni among its members, as well as Eastman students participating in the Orchestral Studies Diploma program and performing with the orchestra.
