"I remember finishing my college degree in music and thinking, 'what exactly do musicians do to make a living....what will I do??' This blog project is fantastic because it addresses that fundamental question, and hopefully provides some guidance to young musicians on the brink of their own careers." Jamecyn Morey Violinist, Polyphonic on Campus video blogger |
POLYPHONIC ON CAMPUS editor Steve Danyew is an Arts Leadership Program alum and New Venture Challenge winner. This month as the site goes live he sits down with the ALP Spotlight:
What makes Polyphonic on Campus unique?
Unlike many, this site is "for young musicians, by young musicians." Users will be able to upload content, share their stories with other musicians across the country, learn from one another, follow the team of young musical video bloggers, and more. We hope that it gives insight into the diverse opportunities that young musicians throughout the country are pursuing with their training.
Please speak to the quality and service provided by Polyphonic on Campus.
Polyphonic on Campus is all about service to the musical community. The content is compelling, inspiring, and fun, as it is generated by younger musicians who are genuinely interested in helping others succeed as they enter or prepare to enter the field of music.
Is Polyphonic only for orchestral musicians?
Polyphonic.org is specifically focused on orchestras. However, On Campus is broader. The core of the On Campus content is still focused around "the orchestral musician" but we also expand to cover content that is relevant to all young musicians, including, but not limited to, opera and musical theater singers, church musicians and private teachers.
How does this enterprise support Eastman and the IML’s values of creativity and entrepreneurship?
Many young musicians are creating their own space in music, blending traditional opportunities with fresh and innovative approaches, and sharing their experiences with Polyphonic on Campus viewers. I think it is inspiring to all musicians to see the kind of creativity and entrepreneurship that many young musicians are bringing to their career paths. And, that is certainly a big part of what Polyphonic on Campus is all about.
What can we expect from you and your videos in the future?
Well, you can expect the unexpected, I hope! We want people to enjoy our videos and all the content of the site, and part of that means having fun with what we do. So, there will definitely be some surprises, and some things that make you laugh. That is part of the variety and diversity of this site; we are giving you a mix of information, inspiration, creativity, and fun. Hopefully it is a good combination!
