Break of Reality:  10 years and Running!
Thursday, Jan 16, 10-11:30 am, Ciminelli Lounge

ALP presents a workshop featuring Break of Reality, a cello rock band originally formed at the Eastman School of Music in 2003.  They are a unique musical experience, whether you’re a fan of Nine Inch Nails or the Kronos Quartet. This unusual band – three cellists and one percussionist – comes to Eastman in January for a concert of its own music and classic modern rock songs, all performed in an intense style that is cinematic, subdued, and heavy all at once (concert is Friday 1/17).  At the workshop, members will give a brief performance, an overview of their experiences after Eastman and thoughts on how to start and sustain a professional ensemble.

Christopher Martin, trumpet
Tuesday, February 11, 9:30 - 10:30 am, Ciminelli Lounge

Christopher Martin is principal trumpet with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.  He graduated from Eastman in 1997, and was a member of the very first graduating class of the ALP certificate program.  He will be at Eastman in February performing as a member of the Chicago Brass Quintet (concert is Tuesday 2/11).  Join us in this informal session with Chris talking a little about his career, some of the extra skills he is called upon to utilize as an orchestra member and honor him as a founding member of ALP.  Plenty of time for questions and some personal interaction!

Nicholas Phan, tenor
Artistic Director, Collaborative Arts Institute of Chicago
Wednesday, March 19, 2:30-3:30 pm, Ciminelli Lounge

Named one of National Public Radio’s Favorite New Artists of 2011, Nicholas Phan continues to distinguish himself as one of the most compelling young tenors appearing on the prestigious concert and opera stages of the world today. Join us as Nicholas talks about his career and his role as Artistic Director of the Collaborative Arts Institute of Chicago, a non-profit which he founded and is devoted to promoting the art song and vocal chamber music repertoire.  A big part of its mission is to provide coaching and support for singers in the early stages of their careers, as well as present a variety of performances by established artists.
