ALP Course guest speakers – Did you know that as an ALP student (or local alum) you can take advantage of attending ANY of the guest speakers sponsored by ALP? That includes the usually 20 or so speakers per semester in ALP courses. How can you find out who’s coming and when? All of the information is posted on the IML Calendar.
Local Internships for 2009-2010
Just a reminder that the process for those of you planning to do local internships in 2009-2010 has begun. What you need to do and important dates can be found on the ALP Local Internships page. It is likely that required hours will be reduced from 120 to 90 per semester in order to reduce expenses and stay within our budget.
Applications for local internships are due Friday, March 27, by 4 p.m.
Summer & Post Graduate Internships
Students or alumni who are considering summer or post graduate internships should be well along in wrapping up potential opportunities. Summer funding is always competitive and never guaranteed. The better written your application, the more chance you have to receive summer funding. Consider that the funding committee knows NOTHING about you, your internship, your host organization or your goals and dreams. Be specific and complete. Have someone else read your application before submission. If they have questions, you can guarantee that the funding committee will too! Didn’t take a grants writing class? There are a number of good resources on ESM’s Office of Careers & Professional Development website (look under Fellowships & Scholarships) and our onsite Careers library has books you can check out.
Applications for summer internships will be due April 17, 2009
In recent years, many of you have been interested in post graduate internships. Because this process is becoming increasingly competitive, we are also suggesting that applications for post graduate internships also be submitted no later than April 17, 2009.
Visit with Memphis Symphony Orchestra & ALP Post Grad Intern Lauren Woodward
In January I had the pleasure of visiting with our ALP post graduate intern at the Memphis Symphony Orchestra (MSO), Lauren Woodward (ALP certificate and BM ’07). Lauren has been working since September primarily supporting artistic operations at the MSO, and has gained valuable experience in many other areas of orchestra management. Lisa Dixon (ALP certificate and BM ’03), MSO Chief Operating Officer, calls Lauren an “outstanding contributor.” Lauren says the internship is exceeding her expectations. Interested in learning more about internship possibilities over the summer or as a post graduate with the Memphis Symphony? Contact Lauren or Lisa via facebook, or let me know!
Eastman School of Music Office of Careers and Professional Development
In an ideal world, musicians would always promote their “product”– themselves – in person. However, more often than not, these first impressions are made through inanimate professional materials, such as résumés, curriculum vitas and cover letters. How do you represent yourself best on paper? What makes you unique? The Office of Careers and Professional Development publishes “how to” guides that address the special needs of musicians. We also have many sample materials for your reference and offer individual counseling to help you put that perfect package together. more
Student Employment in the ALP office
After working for 2 years in the IML office supporting all of our ALP activities, Maria Kanakis is graduating! We will certainly miss her and all of her good work and ready smile. While we’re not yet certain how many students we’ll be hiring in the IML office next year, if you’re interested in working on ALP activities as a student employee (yes, that means getting paid!)—please let me know.
