Questions about the role of the arts in American society permeate many larger arguments about freedom of speech, education, public funding, and civic engagement.  The distinction between the "fine" arts and "popular" art is less clear now than at any other time in history, as is our basic understanding of what art is, who artists are, and how, or even if, the arts contribute to the collective and individual good.  Tom Hall will assess the state of the arts in America today, and examine opportunities artists have to influence our understanding of an
increasingly complicated world.
