John Hanson received his bachelor's (with distinction) and master's degrees, and his Ph.D. from the Eastman School of Music.
Among his academic honors are grants from the Office of Education of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, and the Research Foundation of the State of New York. In 1991, he received a plaque from the Music Theory Society of New York State "in recognition of many years of distinguished service: Founding Member, Board of Directors, and President 1975-1991." That state organization gave impetus to the formation of the national Society for Music Theory.
Numerous papers by Hanson have been published in the Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy, College Music Symposium, and Theory and Practice. His book, Music Fundamentals Workbook (Longman), was published in 1979.
Prior to rejoining the Eastman faculty in 1998, Hanson served as theory instructor at the University of Kansas (1960-64); assistant professor of theory at Carroll College, Waukesha, WI (1966-70); assistant professor of music theory at Eastman (1970-77); and assistant and associate professor of theory, and department chair at the State University of New York at Binghamton (1977-1998).
