What is the difference between a PC and a Mac? Which one is which?

The white computers are Apple computers running Macintosh Operating System 10.2, and the black computers are Dell GSX50 computers running Windows 2000.

Where do I find all the programs?

On the PCs, go to the Start menu and scroll up to Programs. On the eMacs, roll your mouse over the dock (at the bottom) and look for the Applications folder.

Can I use my floppy or Zip disk?

Not on these computers. However, we do have one transfer station in the corner of the room. There you can transfer your files to your UR email account using WebRFM.

How do I use the transfer stations?

Wake up the computer either by moving the mouse or pressing the space bar. Then put in your floppy disk and your Zip disk (we do not provide either) and follow the directions on the screen.

How do I eject my CD?

Press the Eject button on the keyboard (eMac) or press the button on the front of the CD drive (PC).

The Printer is out of paper or is jammed, what should I do?

Please tell one of the student workers. They will refill the paper for you.
If nobody is working, try printing to the other printer. During heavy hours when no one is available, you can change the paper yourself by using one of the reams provided on the lab staff help desk.

I printed using Adobe Photoshop, but all I get are these funny characters and tons of paper. Help!

There is a postscript incompatibility between Adobe Photoshop and our HP printers. To print out anything you created or edited in Photoshop, follow these simple steps:

  1. Go the file menu and select print.
  2. Select the button marked Preview or Save As PDF...
  3. If you clicked Preview, then you will be taken to another program that you can print your document from. If you clicked Save as PDF locate your saved document, open it, and print using either Adobe Reader or Preview.
