Anti-SPAM Service

The University of Rochester offers Sophos PureMessage as an anti-spam solution to help keep junk mail out of your inbox. All Eastman e-mail accounts are automatically enrolled in this service.

What are the Benefits?

The Sophos PureMessage service reduces the amount of spam messages that arrive in your inbox. We recommend using "Medium Level Quarantine" as the filter level. The filter level can be changed at the spam management service web site at http://www.rochester.edu/it/spam.

How do I turn off filtering for my account?

If you would prefer that your e-mail address does not have the spam filtering service, please go to http://www.rochester.edu/it/spam, click Spam Management User Interface, login with your NetID and password, select I want to change my spam filtering level, select Opt Out and click the Apply button.

How do I turn on the daily digest?

If you would like a daily spam digest listing all of the spam messagees quarantined that day, please go to http://www.rochester.edu/it/spam, click Quarantine User Interface, login with your NetID and password, select Options from the menu, click the checkbox next to Notify me periodically of messages that have been blocked and click the Save button.

Additional Options

The Quarantine User Interface web site has options for creating a list of Approved and Blocked Senders. We recommend using these options sparingly. The large majority of spam is sent using a variety of addresses so adding an address to the Blocked Senders list will do little to block spam and could potentially block legitimate mail. If you find that mail from a specific address is repeatedly blocked even though you consider it legitimate, you may want to add the address to the Approved Senders list. We do not recommend frequently adding addresses or adding "blanket" approvals for address domains to the Approved Senders list; the system often blocks messages containing viruses that may look like they were sent from someone you know. If a message is sent from an address on the Approved Senders list, the system will not block it, regardless of how likely it thinks the message is spam.
