The Eastman Percussion Ensemble has been a regular musical organization of the Eastman School of Music since 1959. John H. Beck has conducted the ensemble since the beginning. It performs three concerts during the academic year. Its library contains percussion ensemble music spanning the entire history of the existence of the percussion ensemble in America, from the 1920's to the present. All the percussion students of the Eastman School of Music perform in it and receive credit for doing so. The size of the ensemble will vary from three players to sixteen players depending on the requirements for each composition. Because the professional caliber of its performances is extremely high, many composers send newly composed compositions for the Ensemble to perform.
