Undergraduate Degrees Offered by The College
The division of the University of Rochester known as The College of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering offers the Bachelor of Arts degree and the Bachelor of Science degree; the Eastman School offers the Bachelor of Music degree. Typically, BA students take 40-60% of their courses in the field of concentration, while BM students take 80-90% of their courses in music. The BA, a liberal arts degree program, offers an intensive background in music theory and history (20 credits each), while most BM majors focus more narrowly on professional preparation in performance. Students who desire to focus on the study of music history at the undergraduate level are well served by the BA program. Many BA students graduate with more than one concentration (for example, music and physics). This is easily done within the normal four years of undergraduate residency, and is one of the advantages of study in The College.
Students who wish to apply for admission to BA or BS degree programs, including the BA with a concentration in music, should contact:

Admission to The College is not the same process as admission to Eastman. Application forms and fees are different, deadlines are different, and selection criteria are different. Financial aid also is based on policies and criteria unique to each school.
Applicants who wish to obtain both a BM from Eastman and a BA or BS degree from The College must complete the two separate application processes. Once an applicant is successfully admitted to Eastman and to The College according to the individual criteria of each division, they are considered dual degree students of the University. The coordination of the two degree programs is facilitated by the assignment of an adviser on each campus.

BA/BS Students and Eastman
Undergraduate students who matriculate only into The College of the University of Rochester may participate at Eastman in a variety of ways. These may include lessons (usually with a graduate teaching assistant), classes, or ensembles. In addition, the College Music Department sponsors its own array of seven vibrant faculty-directed ensembles and offers a broad range of music courses, including a concentration in music.
