New Horizons Beginning Band

New Horizons Beginning Band, Kilbourn Hall, May 16, 2013

New Horizons Beginning Band (Green Band) is designed for beginning instrumentalist, for those wishing to refresh instrumental skills, or for those making instrument changes. No previous experience is necessary and true beginners (can’t even put an instrument together) are welcome. Different rehearsal space is provided for both the true beginners and those with minimal experience. Beginning band meets once a week from 9 – 11 on Wednesday mornings. Members need to provide their own instruments, music stands, and purchase some beginning books.


New Horizons Concert Band (Intermediate) and Symphonic Band (Advanced)

Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9-11 a.m.

Concert and Symphonic Band members are expected to play in just one of these two bands, attending both the band and section rehearsals of their selected band.  Certain exceptions may be made, at the invitation of the conductors, to meet critical needs of a band. Members may switch from the Concert to the Symphonic Band or vice versa at any time.

Tuition: $200 per semester


New Horizons Beginning Strings

The New Horizons Beginning (Green) Strings is a program designed for adults who are either new to violin, viola, cello, or bass, or wish to brush up on their technical, musical, or ensemble skills.  Sessions are in a class/lab format and address a variety of topics, including music-reading, rhythm skills, string technique, ensemble playing, and practice following a conductor.  Participants are encouraged to share their questions, as well as their successes and struggles in practicing to each class meeting, as participants have much to learn from each other.  Repertoire studied will consist of common tunes, ensemble arrangements, technical exercises, and rhythm-reading exercises.

New Horizons Advanced Orchestra

New Horizons Chorus

New Horizons Big Band

The New Horizons Big Band is a small ensemble for advanced players, specializing in music from the Big Band era. Permission to enroll is needed from the conductor.

New Horizons Vintage Jazz

Don Sherman, Director
Wednesdays, 11:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Vintage Jazz Ensemble reflects the traditional Big Band instrumentation of saxophones, trumpets, trombones and rhythm sections. Students enrolled in this class will learn the basics of the jazz style, sound, balance, meter, sight-reading  and terminology in a traditional Big Band setting, modeled on legendary acts like Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw and Duke Ellington. This group studies and performs a variety of literature from various periods of jazz performance, ranging from big band swing, bossa nova, jazz/rock, contemporary pop and dixieland.

Members have the opportunity to solo with the band either through improvisation and/or a ballad setting.

Those desiring to enroll must possess at least intermediate level instrumental skills, and should read music. Enrollment with permission of the director.

Baroque Ensemble

Explore baroque music and performance practice in a person centered way.  Members can choose the solos, the small and/or the large ensemble pieces they want to experience.  Members can choose to play in our concerts at Eastman every semester.  Members can choose to share their ideas, expertise, and constructive suggestions.  In New Horizon Baroque we try to notice achievements in others, and ourselves, and we try to enjoy our mistakes and challenges because they are opportunities for growth.  New Horizon Baroque provides a positive encouraging environment, rich in information to grow in or to simply enjoy the musical skills you have now.

Singers, keyboardist, who would like to accompany on the harpsichord, flute, oboe, bassoon, recorder players, strings, guitarist, lute players, and any other baroque instrument are welcome.
