Private Lessons

Private Lessons are available on all instruments and in voice, composition, and jazz improvisation with Community Music School instructors and interns. For most instrumentalists the recommended age for beginning private study is age 7. Pianists and violinists may start at a younger age; for vocalists the recommended age is about 14.

Instructors and Interns

Community Music School instructors are professional artist-educators who are Western New York’s most sought after teachers and performers. Community Music School interns are Eastman School of Music students or recent graduates who are among the best and brightest young performers in the world. In addition to instructors and interns, some members of the Eastman School of Music collegiate faculty also offer lessons through the Community Music School; each sets his or her own individual fee. Call the Community Music School office for more details.

Buddy Lessons

If you have a friend who plays the same instrument, you may register together and share the lesson time. Buddies should understand that they will spend part of their lesson time listening to their buddy. Buddy Lessons are recommended as an intermediate step between school group lessons and future private lessons. Buddy Lessons are not confined to any age level but instead to performance level. They are generally meant to serve beginner to intermediate levels of performance.

The advantages of taking Buddy Lessons:

    • They are less expensive
    • Students are able to study with a master teacher on their instrument
    • Students frequently learn a great deal from each other!

Students may use Buddy Lessons to see if they are ready for more serious levels of private music study.

Beginner Group Lessons

Group lessons are offered on a number of instruments and age levels for beginners.  Group lessons are one year introductory specialized classes focusing on the fundamentals of a particular instrument.  Students may register for a second year if they and the teacher agree they could benefit from another year of group lessons.  In general, however, students will progress on to either private or buddy lessons after taking a year of introductory group lessons.
