Student Recitals

Classification of Recitals and Student Eligibility

Regularly scheduled Community Music School recitals are normally held on Saturday afternoons or Sunday afternoons in Howard Hanson Hall and Hatch Recital Hall.

General Recitals: For students of all ages and levels. Held in Howard Hanson Hall
Showcase Recital: For all students who play with great integrity. There is no minimum age or curricular level for these recitals. It is an opportunity to showcase the students who work hard in and out of lessons, and take great pride in their work. Held in Hatch Recital Hall and occasionally in Kilbourn Hall

Procedures

Faculty may add students to any appropriate ECMS recital by completing the online ECMS Recital Sign-Up Form. Hard copies, and emails of sign-up sheets will still be accepted, but are not preferred.

All form submissions are due by noon 10 days prior to the date of recital.

Please use separate form entries for each student being recommended. The form will require that you include the following information:

  • Student name as it should appear on the program
  • Student’s instrument (or voice type)
  • Name of collaborators
  • Student age
  • Title of Composition (key, opus number, movements, etc.)
  • Composer name
  • Accurate timing of the composition

If you have several student entries, please note their order placement under “Special Instructions” (using a progression of less advanced to more advanced, and, secondarily, younger to older students). Please submit no more than 12 minutes of music total from your studio for an individual recital.

You may request earlier or later recital times in the event that there may be more than one program, but there is no guarantee that your request will be honored (General Recitals usually start at 3 p.m. or 4:30 p.m.). Each student performance should be limited to six minutes, but occasionally longer performances are acceptable. Administration has the right to eliminate movements or require cuts if total time is excessive. Total performance time of an ECMS recital should never exceed 50 minutes, in order that programs last no longer than an hour.

Rehearsal time is often available in Howard Hanson Hall before the 2 p.m. recital, ending 15 minutes before the recital begins. Sign-up sheets are kept at the ECMS reception desk.

Sound checks are available at 3:00 p.m. in Hatch Recital Hall or Kilbourn Hall for students to try the stage for a few minutes each.
