Flute Technique Class I

Alternate Mondays at 6 p.m.For those ambitious and advanced flute students who wish to improve their technique. Minimum requirement for the class is performance at NYSSMA Level VI and an interview or audition with the instructor. Call Jan Angus at 274-1960. Rigorous work will be done to master the full range of the flute through major and minor scales; major, minor, diminished and augmented arpeggios; interval work; mastery of articulation with emphasis on double and triple tonguing. Primary repertoire will be selected from standard daily exercises books of Kujala and Taffanel and Gaubert as well as passage work from the solo and orchestral repertoire. 16 classes. Class Details

Krusenstjerna Scholarship Flute Choir

An ensemble created for advanced high school flutists. Repertory is chosen from standard and original flute choir music as well as transcriptions from all periods and styles of music. Clarinet Choir

Saturdays at 2:30 p.m.The ECMS clarinet choir is an exciting new ensemble open to clarinet students performing at NYSSMA levels 4 through 6. We will cover music from the standard and original clarinet choir and chamber music repertory as well as transcriptions from all styles and periods. Students will learn how to blend within an ensemble while focusing on intonation, rhythm, tone, technique, historical context and performance practice. Saxophone Quartet

TBAECMS saxophone quartets are open to middle and high school students who are playing at NYSSMA levels 4-6. Quartet participation includes hour long rehearsals each week as well as performances throughout the school year, including a full length quartet recital in the spring. Trumpet Ensemble

The trumpet ensemble is a practice laboratory where we will work on ensemble playing, intonation, blending, and rhythmic study. Rhythm Adventure (percussion ensemble)
Middle School; 3 units

The ensemble is open to intermediate level students who perform at levels III or IV. Students would normally be expected to play in all 3 major areas of orchestral percussion: snare drum, timpani and keyboard percussion. On occasion students will be accepted who are at an advanced level in only two of the areas. The ensemble repertory will include traditional drumming skill based ensembles, keyboard percussion ensembles, body percussion and hand drumming. Attention will also be given to developing good tone and techniques on triangle, tambourine, bass drum and cymbals. Students should be willing to work independently to prepare their parts so that rehearsal time can be spent on developing the musical aspects of ensemble playing. Drum Joy (percussion ensemble)

This ensemble is open to advanced students who perform at levels V and above. Students would normally be expected to play in all 3 major areas of orchestral percussion: snare drum, timpani and keyboard percussion. On occasion students will be accepted who are at an advanced level in only two of the areas. The ensemble repertory will include traditional percussion and world music ensembles, keyboard percussion ensembles, and hand drumming. Attention will be given to refining the techniques on a wide variety of orchestra percussion instruments. The ensemble is always delighted to perform compositions written by ensemble members. Skill in non-jazz improvisation would definitely be a plus. Students should be willing to work independently to prepare their parts so that rehearsal time can be spent on developing the musical aspects of ensemble playing. Permission of the director is required. Contact the director at 585.274-1419 or rcahn@esm.rochester.edu The group usually plays two ensemble concerts per year (one in December and one in May) and often collaborates with other groups within the University of Rochester and the Eastman School of Music.

Marimba Journey (percussion ensemble)

Marimba Journey provides an opportunity for adult students to apply their marimba skills in a challenging yet supportive ensemble environment. Repertory will be selected to challenge and build the skills of individual keyboard percussion players. Repertory is likely to include: ragtime arrangements, arrangements of music transcribed from string quartets and orchestral repertory along with music by contemporary composers originally written for keyboard percussion ensembles.
Members of the ensemble are likely to include students who play in the New Horizon Groups at the ECMS, other adult ECMS students, community members who might have been music majors in college, former marimbists, music teachers and anyone who loves the sound of the marimba and has some basic skills. While some of our music is challenging, we are often able to accommodate students with differing levels of experience. Most importantly, we have fun and complete our rehearsals in a supportive, non-critical environment. Come and join in!

Stick Talk (percussion ensemble)

Stick Talk Ensemble (percussion) provides a first percussion ensemble experience for students who are at performance levels I-III. Students should have developed skills in at least two of the major areas of percussion study: snare drum/ timpani/ keyboard percussion.
This ensemble will strive to develop both the musical skills of percussionists through emphasis on music reading, listening to others to build ensemble skills, maintaining strong inner rhythm, and exploring hand drumming techniques. The ensemble’s emphasis is on the process of making music in an ensemble situation and building the personal and group dynamics needed in this musical situation. Applying student’s current skills and having fun with percussion is our basic goal.
There will be a final performance- demonstration for parents, siblings and friends.
Tuition: $68 for 4-week session; January only.
