Guitar for Beginners

Mondays, January 25-March 22, at 6:30 p.m.A perfect opportunity for anyone to explore and learn the basics of guitar playing. Learn how to read music, play chords, and perform basic pick techniques. The class provides special insight into classical and jazz guitar playing. The group atmosphere makes for a relaxed environment, fitting for those with little or no experience. This is an excellent precursor to private lessons, and a vehicle for parents to learn basic guitar skills for family use. Open to high school students and adults; middle school students welcome if accompanied by a parent.

Fretboard Harmony

Eight one-hour sessionsDesigned for all guitar players – classical, jazz, folk, or pop. The focus is on the theory behind the scales and chords regardless of style. Knowledge of harmony on the guitar will enhance creative approaches to accompaniment, speed up memorization, and improve improvisation skills.

Eastman Youth Guitar Ensemble

Wednesdays at 6 p.m.Seeing other students play, and making music with them is enriching and fun and an extraordinary opportunity for guitar students to develop ensemble playing skills. No prior experience necessary - all levels welcome. Young people and adults will learn to rely on their ears as they receive instruction on basic styles of playing this multi-stringed folk instrument. Hammered Dulcimer Ensemble

Open by audition to intermediate and advanced hammered dulcimer players. The group will play a wide repertory of music, including American fiddle tunes, hymns, Eastern European dance tunes and arrangements of English country dances. The group will perform several times during the spring. A listening/learning CD will be provided to class members; a special feature of ensemble rehearsals will be visiting musicians, playing a variety of instruments.Permission of instructor required. Eastman Youth Chamber Soloists

Thursdays, 6:30-8:30 p.m.For advanced young string players, who already possess a refined string technique, and solid ensemble skills. EYCO facilitates the musical development of young players through the detail oriented study of musical masterpieces from the Baroque to the present. Rehearsals focus on subtleties of string playing (timing, nuance, gesture, phrasing, tone color, sound production, and articulation) which lead to the ensemble’s delivery of high caliber performances. EYCO showcases the developing skills of individual members through frequent solo opportunities and rotating principal positions. EYCO members exhibit refined stage presence, virtuosic string playing, and mature musical interpretations from every period.
Audition required. Students should perform two solo works at NYSSMA level 6 which demonstrate contrasting styles and tempos. No accompaniment is necessary. Sight reading may be asked. Intermediate string players learn the basics of string ensemble skills, develop their techniques, and gain an understanding of the elements of music. Players will learn to lead, follow, and learn how to blend sounds in a string section. Basic bowing styles common to Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods are studied and mastered. This orchestra creates a solid foundation of orchestral string playing skills.

Eastman Kaleidoscope Community Orchestra
for strings, brass, woodwinds & percussion

Children and adults of all ages learn fundamentals of orchestral playing, and refine ensembles skills in a fun and supportive environment. Music is individually arranged, if needed, to accommodate individual abilities of orchestra members. The intergenerational aspect of this orchestra gives older and younger beginners a chance to learn from more experienced players of all ages. Kaleidoscope offers more advanced players an excellent leadership opportunity. Solo opportunities exist in winds, brass, percussion and strings alike. Musicians of all ages and abilities are amazed by how much they learn and achieve in this ensemble!

Chamber Music for Strings

String students (violin, viola, cello) who have taken an ECMS jury/exam and have passed at least a level III, are welcome to participate in a weekly chamber ensemble at their corresponding level. These ensembles will consist of 3–4 students grouped by standard instrumental combinations. Students who have not taken a jury at ECMS are welcome to audition for the appropriate chamber music level. Auditions will be held Saturday & Sunday, June 14-15, 2008, Thursday, September 4 and during the academic year by appointment with the director. Saturdays at noon.This weekly one-hour ensemble is highly focused to develop advanced chamber, ensemble performance techniques, and beginning orchestral performance ability as it opens the path for students to all forms of performance. Students will learn a variety of musical styles from baroque to contemporary, including orchestral excerpts, as well as explore techniques of individual performance skills needed to lead chamber, ensemble, and orchestras. Cellissimo! Cello Ensemble

Saturdays, 1:30-3 p.m.For intermediate and advanced cellists. Explore the unique sonorities of the cello, universally compared to the sounds of the human voice! Discover and refine techniques, specific to cello playing in ensemble, by rehearsing and performing varied musical styles from Vivaldi and Rachmaninoff, to Rock Music and Argentine Tango.
