FLUTE TECHNIQUE CLASS

 

Prerequisite

Students must already be performing NYSSMA level VI solos, a good grasp of all major and minor scales, and possess a love of learning and a desire to practice.

 

Course Description

Flute Technique class is a bi-weekly class meeting 8 times per semester.  The overall goal of this Technique Class is Master as many of the technical requirements in the ECMS Flute Curricular Levels 4 and 5 including:

  • Memorization of and technical facility using all

    • Major and minor scales, thirds and arpeggios

    • Diminished and augmented arpeggios

    • Scales in varied rhythmic groupings (3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 notes per beat)

    • Chromatic scale, C1-C4

    • Third octave work developing use of C#4 and D4

    • Facility in using various articulations

      • Develop speed and evenness in double tonguing

      • Develop speed and evenness in triple tonguing

  • Develop sight reading and efficient practice time through

    • Gaining the ability to analyze a work from the standpoint of compositional use of scales, thirds, arpeggios and other technical elements.

    • Kujala - Vade Mecum page 54 (focus on groups of 7; start with slurring groups of 7, then as written)
    • Angus after Gilbert – Advanced Chromatic Workou
    • Taffanel – Exercise #5, G-L; vary articulations daily
  • Double and Triple Tonguing:
    • Apply Angus Bb scale routine to all major scales

Grading

Because students enter with varying degrees of competency, grading will reflect individual progress made.  Individual mastery of key components will be monitored throughout the course and individual playing exams to demonstrate overall progress and facility with assigned material will be given at the end of each semester, January and June.
