COURSE DESCRIPTION

Brief Overview of Course

Music Theory IV is the third course in a sequence of four courses leading to the Advanced Placement Examination in Music Theory.  In Music Theory II, students focused on the basic musicianship skills, including sight singing and solfege, rhythmic performance and conducting, recognition of intervals and triads, and rhythmic, melodic and two-part dictation.  Music Theory IV will further develop these skills but will also include a study of the following:

  • Harmonic and melodic dictation with applied dominants and modulation to closely related keys
  • Recognition of major and minor triads and dominant seventh chords and their inversions and types of seventh chords
  • Recognition of phrases and periods

Course Goals

  • to help students develop the musicianship skills necessary to hear and enhance their own music making to fulfill the final aural skills course leading to the Advanced Placement Examination in Music Theory
  • to fulfill part of the requirements in the sequence of courses leading to an ECMS Diploma

Course Activities

  • Advanced Sight Singing to Solfege, using moveable “do” and a “la”- based minor moveable do is a system in which the syllable “do” moves to the tonic note of each successive major key in the circle of fifths. La-based minor uses the syllable “la” for each minor mode because the minor mode is found on the 6th scale degree of the relative major.  This allows for the same syllables to be used for any major and its relative minor key.
  • Advanced Rhythmic Performance and Dictation in simple and compound meter
  • Recognition of Intervals, Triads and Seventh chords
  • Melodic and Harmonic Dictation in all major and relative minor keys
  • Recognition of material studied through listening to a wide variety of literature

Course Material

  • Duplicated material for each lesson will be handed out in class.  Students should purchase a three-ring binder to store this material in.
  • There will be a small fee of $20.00 per semester for this material, which will be added to the student’s bill

PREREQUISITES

  • Students must have successfully completed Music Theory II and III.

PART I: REVIEW

  • Review of SIGHT SINGING AND MELODIC DICTATION in all major and minor keys
  • Review of RHYTHMIC PERFORMANCE AND DICTATION in simple and compound meter                 
  • Review of RECOGNITION OF ALL INTERVALS
  • Review of RECOGNITION OF TRIADS: Major, Minor, Augmented and Diminished Triads as well as inversion of major triads

PART II 

  • SIGHT SINGING AND MELODIC DICTATION:  Modulation to the dominant or relative major key
  • RECOGNITION OF DOMINANT SEVENTH CHORDS AND THEIR INVERSIONS          
  • RECOGNITION OF FIVE TYPES OF SEVENTH CHORDS:  M7, Mm7, m7, dm7 and d7
  • MELODIC AND HARMONIC DICTATION:  Modulation to the dominant or relative major key
  • DEVELOPMENT OF LISTENING SKILLS THROUGH A WIDE VARIETY OF  MUSICAL LITERATURE: recognition of phrases, cadences, mode, meter, instrumentation and harmonic progression

PART III 

  • SIGHT SINGING AND MELODIC DICTATION:  Modulation to other keys
  • RECOGNITION OF DOMINANT SEVENTH CHORDS AND TYPES OF SEVENTH CHORDS CONTINUED 
  • RECOGNITION OF MAJOR AND MINOR TRIADS AND THEIR INVERSIONS
  • MELODIC AND HARMONIC DICTATION:  Modulation to other keys
  • CONTINUED DEVELOPMENT OF LISTENING SKILLS THROUGH A WIDE VARIETY OF MUSICAL LITERATURE: recognition of phrases, cadences, mode, meter, instrumentation and harmonic progression

 

PREPARATION FOR THE AP EXAM

The final part of this course will be devoted to practice from previously released AP Examinations

 

COURSE POLICIES AND WEIGHTING OF GRADES

Attendance

  • Students must attend class regularly in order to keep up with the material and achieve a good grade for the course.
  • If a student cannot attend a class, he/she should let the teacher know before the class and attend the other section of the same course that week.

Grades

Grades will be given at the end of each semester.  Grades are based on the following four factors.

  • Attendance
  • Class Participation
  • Weekly Preparation of Assigned Sight Singing Exercises
  • Four Dictation Tests and Four Individual Sight Singing Tests

 

MOST COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do I know if I should be taking Music Theory IV?

  • In general, students should be the age of a high school sophomore or older in order that they have the maturity to grapple with the concepts of the course.
  • Students must have successfully completed Music Theory II and Music Theory III with the grade of B+ or better in both courses.
  • In order to be qualified to take the Advanced Placement Examination in Music Theory in May of the same year, students must be taking Music Theory IV and V concurrently.
  • It is highly recommended, though not mandatory, that non-keyboard majors have passed either the Piano Proficiency Test or the Diploma Piano class before taking Music Theory IV.
  • Students should be able to attend class regularly.
  • Students should have time to devote a minimum of two hours a week to practice sight singing excerpts and use assigned computer software for ear-training drills.

 

What academic requirements does Music Theory IV fulfill?

  • It is the third required theory course for the Advanced Diploma in Theory and the Diploma in an Instrument or Voice.
  • It is a required course for the Advanced Diploma in Theory, the Pre-collegiate Diploma in an Instrument or Voice or the Pre-collegiate Diploma in Theory.
  • It is the third of four required courses qualifying a student to take the Advanced Placement Examination in Music Theory.

 

How can I pass out of Music Theory IV?

  • Students must successfully pass a Placement Test in Music Theory IV.
  • Occasionally, a student may be exempted from taking Music Theory IV if they excelled in Music Theory II.
  • Please Note that we do NOT give credit for Music Theory IV even if a student has achieved the top grade of “5” on the AP Theory Exam because the course covers much more material than is required for this exam.

 

Can I take the AP Examination in Music Theory when I have successfully completed Music Theory IV and Music Theory V

  • Yes, all students who have successfully completed Music Theory IV and Music Theory V are qualified to take the AP Examination in Music Theory.

 

Can I take Music Theory IV without taking Music Theory V?

No, the aural skills studied in Music Theory IV are based on the harmonic resources studied in Music Theory V.

 

Do I have to take the AP Examination in Music Theory if I take Music Theory IV?

No, while most students do take the AP Theory Exam at the conclusion of Music Theory IV, a few students take Music Theory IV in partial fulfillment of their diploma requirements and choose not to take the exam.
