Eastman Beginning Strings –program overview

EBS Group Class

Saturdays 1-2 p.m.

Open to Elementary & Middle School string students with at least one year of playing experience.  Students learn basic elements of string-orchestral ensemble playing in a fun and supportive environment while applying many of the theoretical concepts taught in the Theory in Motion and Theory I classes. Highly recommended for students working on NYSSMA Solo Levels and/or Eastman Levels  I-II. Students will learn how to build solidarity and community by collaborating with all of the bowed string-instruments through movement, conducting, singing, and leading exercises. EBS Camerata

Grades 3-8; 3 units

Saturdays 2-3 p.m.

Open to advancing Elementary & Middle School string students with at least two years of private study.  Students will hone fundamental elements of orchestral ensemble playing in a focused and supportive environment led by a conductor. Highly recommended for students working on NYSSMA Solo Levels and/or Eastman Levels II-III+. Students build solidarity and community in their ensemble sound by collaborating with all of the bowed string-instruments through movement, conducting, singing, and leading exercises. Repertoire will cover music from contrasting eras and styles, while focusing on developing ensemble participation and confidence. Teacher recommendation or audition is required. Chamber Music for Strings

Middle/High School–adults; 3 units

String students (violin, viola, cello) who have taken an ECMS jury/exam and have passed at least a level III, are welcome to participate in a weekly chamber ensemble at their corresponding level. These ensembles will consist of 3–4 students grouped by standard instrumental combinations..  Some include a pianist.  Students who have not taken a jury at ECMS are welcome to audition for the appropriate chamber music level.  Email jmilnes@esm.rochester.edu.

Community Baroque Players

High School – Adult; 3 units
Christopher Haritatos and Boel Gidholm, Directors
Saturdays at 12:30-2 p.m.

This new ensemble will introduce advanced players (levels V and VI) to to baroque ensemble repertoire and to principles of historical performance practice (on modern instruments).  String players will make up the core of the ensemble, but players of other instruments may be able to join as well depending on the specific repertoire chosen each semester.   Contact the director for more information or for required audition.<chrisharitatos@yahoo.com>

Harp Choir

Middle School, High School & Adults; 3 units

Open to all students of harp, both lever and pedal. Repertory consists of pieces for both beginning and more advanced harpists. No audition required.

Advanced Harp Choir

Guitar Sampler for Children

Elementary grades 1-3; 2 units
Petar Kodzas, Instructor
Mondays, September 8-October 27 at 4 p.m

This class is a beginning guitar class for children.  Primary goal is to establish contact with the instrument in a fun way, and introduce young players to basic concepts of guitar and music. You do not need to have a guitar for the first class.  Parents are required to attend first class.

Arts and Times of the Guitar

High School–adults; 2 units

Mondays, November 3-January 5, 6:30-7:30 p.m.

With over 500 years of history in printed music, guitar is one of the oldest instruments.  This class will explore this rich heritage from Renaissance to today.  No playing experience required.

Guitar Sampler for Adults

High School–adults; 2 units

Mondays, January 12 – March 9, 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Have a guitar in a closet that you always wanted to learn how to play?  Looking for a way to enjoy playing music, but are not sure guitar is the right instrument?  Come and join this beginner class-no previous experience required just good will and a bit of daily practice time!  You do not have to have a guitar to come to the first class.

Fretboard Harmony

High School–adults; 2 units
Staff Instructor
March 16-May 11. Mondays at 6:30 p.m.
Eight one-hour sessions

Designed for all guitar players – classical, jazz, folk, or pop. The focus is on the theory behind the scales and chords regardless of style. Knowledge of harmony on the guitar will enhance creative approaches to accompaniment, speed up memorization, and improve improvisation skills.

Guitar Adventure (ensemble)

Grades 3-5 — 3 units

Tuesdays at 5 p.m.

Guitar Adventure Is an entry level guitar ensemble class for students in Grades 3-5.  Basic ensemble skills will be addressed and rehearsed: successful cooperation in a group musical environment, musicianship, and technical elements.  Students are expected to have basic reading of all notes in the first position and ability to count simple rhythms.  Classical (nylon string) guitar and finger picking technique are required.  Groups usually participate in a minimum of three performances/recitals.

Eastman Youth Guitar Ensemble I

Middle School – 3 units
Saturdays at 12:15 p.m.
