Proficiency Test for PCL 101

This proficiency test covers all material from the syllabus for PCL 101, and includes, but is not limited to, Chapters 1—4 (pp.1-164) of Keyboard Musicianship, Book 1, 8th Edition, by Lyke, Caramia, Alexander, and Haydon; (Stipes Publishing Co.). Students who elect to take the proficiency must have a copy of this text—no duplicated material will be allowed.
Note: all playing—from scales to fundamental skills to repertoire—must be at a high musical level, with attention to proper pedaling, steady rhythm, and a sensitivity to tonal color.

NOTE: Everything listed below must be performed in order to pass this proficiency test.
1) Technique:
- all white key major scales, hands together, 2 octaves (fingerings found on pp. 359-360)
2) Repertoire:
- perform 2 pieces from pp.152-159 (Chapter 4)
- perform a piece of your choice not included in Keyboard Musicianship, Book 1
- play a piano accompaniment to a piece from the repertoire of your major instrument
3) Fundamental Skills:
- accompany all 4 melodies on pp. 123-124, using the 4-voice texture found on p. 122 (bottom) and 4 different rhythmic patterns; use sustaining pedal
- harmonize the 2 melodies on p.125 (follow instructions on top of melodies); use sustaining pedal
- play The Jolly Miller on p. 130; use sustaining pedal
- transpose all melodies on pp. 133-137
- improvise a 12 measure phrase, using #1-#3 on p.161 as a basis
