OBJECTIVES:
a complete orientation to the keyboard for beginning pianists

PLEASE NOTE: ONLY STUDENTS WHO HAVE COMPLETED MUR 118 MAY ENROLL IN MUR 119.
1) Technique:
- selected white key minor scales (3 forms) in eighth notes, hands separate and together, 2 octaves
- review of white key major scales hands together 2 octaves
- the chromatic, whole tone and pentatonic scales, hands alone
- modes
2) Repertoire:
- songs arrangements
- pieces at the late elementary to early intermediate levels
- patriotic songs
- popular repertoire
3) Fundamental Skills:
- chord progressions:
- lead sheet harmonization, with triads, and jazz chords
- harmonization by ear
- use of primary and secondary chords with inversions
- two-hand accompaniments
- study of all 7th chords
- sight reading
- improvisation

Grades
Grades are based more on progress in class than on exam performance:
- Attendance—NO MORE THAN 2 UNEXCUSED ABSENCES ARE ALLOWED.
- quality and quantity of work covered
- progress shown throughout the semester
- student’s playing relative to the requirements of the level
- class work including preparation for classes, labs, and lessons
- 4 Chapter tests
- quizzes at the discretion of the instructor
- input from the instructor, including daily assessment, evaluation of test performances, and other criteria as stated in individual policies
