ENROLLMENT DEPOSIT

Students who are accepted and who plan to attend Eastman must send a nonrefundable enrollment deposit of $400 with the Final Decision Form to the Admissions Office by the date given in the acceptance letter. The $400 deposit is credited toward the student’s first term bill, and is a firm commitment on the part of the student to attend Eastman. In keeping with NACAC’s Principles of Good Practice, we assume that students will act ethically and make a commitment to only one school.

ENROLLMENT PACKET

Following receipt of the enrollment deposit and the Final Decision Form, orientation materials are made available to each new student, either by mail or online. These materials general include the following.

  • A residence hall/dining contract for undergraduate students, and an explanation of the meal plans available (All Eastman undergraduates are required to live in the residence hall until the end of their junior year. Graduate students may request area housing information from the Dean of Students Office, or may locate it on the Dean of Students website: www.rochester.edu/doso. Accommodations in the Student Living Center may be available, on request, to a limited number of graduate students.)
  • Forms and information from University Health Service, including a mandatory health history form

  • Detailed information regarding orientation events is posted online by about the middle of May. Orientation information is co-ordinated by the Admissions and Student Life Offices at Eastman. However, the enclosed forms noted above must be returned to the office indicated on each form.

VISA INFORMATION FOR NON-RESIDENTS

As part of their preparation to study at Eastman, international students who are not permanent residents of the United States must obtain a student visa. The paperwork necessary to obtain an I-20 (certificate of eligibility for a student visa) from the University of Rochester is sent by the candidate to the international student secretary in the Eastman Admissions Office before being forwarded to the International Student Office for processing.

Getting a visa takes time—in some countries as much as several months. It is the student’s responsibility to follow up with all paperwork, and to obtain the visa in enough time to arrive in Rochester for orientation. Incomplete or incorrect submission of forms to Eastman may jeopardize the applicant’s study in the U.S.

NEW YORK STATE IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENT

New York State Law #2165 requires all students to provide proof of immunity to measles, mumps, and rubella. In addition, the University of Rochester requires tetanus-diphtheria immunization, a tuberculin skin test (PPD: Mantoux intradermal skin test and interpretation), and a chest x-ray if the PPD is positive. This proof must be attached to the Health History and Immunization Compliance Form that is part of the enrollment packet. Students who do not complete immunization requirements will be withdrawn from the School, by state law. (New York State residents are withdrawn after 30 days; out-of-state residents, including international students, are withdrawn after 45 days.) Notice is given here to allow students ample time to fulfill these requirements.

International students please note: The cost of completing the immunization requirements may be substantially higher in the U.S. than in the home country. Students may wish to refer to the University Health Service website for more information: www.rochester.edu/uhs.

TEACHER ASSIGNMENT POLICY

It is the philosophy of the Eastman School that students are accepted into the School and to a specific degree program; the assignment to an applied studio generally occurs after the student enrolls. The dean of academic affairs, in consultation with faculty members, assigns students to the studio of specific teachers; notice of teacher assignment usually is mailed in June. Where more than one teacher is available for a specific instrument, the dean balances three factors: the student’s preference for a particular teacher; the teacher’s preference for a particular student; and the contractual limitations on the size of each teacher’s studio.

The application includes a Teacher Preference Form that may be used by applicants to request specific studio teachers. This form should be submitted at the time of application, but can be submitted before April 1.

We understand that the assignment of the applied teacher can have a bearing on an individual’s choice of schools. Applicants who feel strongly about studying with a particular teacher are urged to submit the Teacher Preference Form and to contact that teacher well in advance of the audition so that the teacher will know of the student’s interest.

FINAL TRANSCRIPT REQUIREMENT

All students are accepted pending the completion of current studies. Between the time of acceptance and orientation, all enrolled students must submit a final transcript from their high school or college to the Admissions Office. (We expect to receive the final transcript by July 1.) For graduating high school seniors, this final transcript provides proof of graduation, which is required by the federal government for dispersement of federal funds under Title IV.

For transfer students, the final transcript is needed for the Eastman registrar to decide which credits will transfer to Eastman; such determinations are made during orientation. Without this transcript there can be considerable delay in determining your academic standing as a transfer student.

The final transcript from entering graduate students provides proof of completion of previous studies. This is especially important to document the completion of an undergraduate degree (or equivalent). If studies were completed at an earlier time, and the transcript in the applicant’s file is final, no further transcript is needed.
