Repertory listed below is for auditions to the BM, MM, and DMA degrees. Other application requirements may apply. Please consult the online application for more detailed information on applying to these degree programs. Repertory listed is subject to change but will generally not change after September 1.

Each of the following:
  • Solos by Barat, Jacob, Capuzzi, Herbert L. Clarke, or other works of similar difficulty

MM, DMA
Prepared repertory should include contemporary solo literature and orchestral excerpts. Possible sight-reading.
Horn BM
Each of the following:
  • Any complete concerto from the standard concerto repertory, such as Mozart, Strauss, Gliere, Jacob, Haydn, etc.
  • A movement from the standard recital repertory, such as Hindemith, Ewazen, Beethoven, Schumann, Cherubini, etc.
  • Three etudes from any three of the following: Maxime-Alphonse Etudes, Book 4, 5, or 6; Kling; Kopprasch; Neuling; Belloli; Gallay; Reynolds
  • Three to five orchestral excerpts from the standard repertory (Beethoven, Mahler, Brahms, Strauss, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, etc.)
  • All major and harmonic minor scales, 2-3 octaves, in eighth notes at quarter note=112-126, and corresponding arpeggios

MM, DMA

Prescreening requirement: By December 1, all graduate horn applicants must submit a preliminary audition recording (DVD preferred, though CD is permissible).  The prescreening recording should include:

  • 2 movements of contrasting concerti or contrasting recital repertoire (with or without piano accompaniment)
  • 2-3 orchestral excerpts demonstrating contrasting styles, periods, and technical/musical attributes.

MM Live Auditions in Rochester
Prepared repertory should be selected from traditional and contemporary solo literature (including unaccompanied repertory) and orchestral excerpts from several eras and styles, demonstrating advanced technical and musical development. Audition also will include sight-reading and transposition.

DMA Live Auditions in Rochester
Applicants should prepare a program of solo, orchestral, and etude repertory demonstrating professional standards of technical and musical development. Proficiency in natural horn is encouraged.

  • Contrasting etudes by Charlier and/or Bordogni

MM, DMA

Prescreening requirement: By December 1, all graduate trumpet applicants must submit a preliminary audition recording (DVD strongly preferred, though CD is permissible). The prescreening recording should be a minimum of 25 minutes in duration.

Prepared repertory for prescreening and a live audition should include a range of solo literature (including contemporary) and orchestral excerpts.  Possible sight-reading. Familiarity with high horns and transposition is required.

Applicants in jazz studies and contemporary media should refer to the section on jazz for additional requirements.

Tuba BM
Each of the following:
  • One Bordogni melodic study
  • One Kopprasch technical etude #17 or #21
  • All scales
  • Excerpts: Wagner, “Meistersinger” Overture (Letter J to the end), Berlioz Hungarian March, and Ride of the Valkyries
  • Performance applicants must also play the Vaughan Williams Concerto and the cadenza from the HIndemith Sonata Concerto (mvt. 1 or 2); Music Education applicants whose instrument is tuba must play the Edward Gregson Concerto (mvt. 1 only) and the cadenza from the Hindemith Sonata

Jazz

Prescreening Requirement: By December 1, all applicants to the jazz studies and contemporary media program must submit a preliminary audition compact disc or tape. The prescreening CD/tape should comprise 3-4 varied jazz selections, each including improvisation. Applicants should refer to the online application for more detailed information on the prescreening requirement. The guidelines given below apply to those invited for a live audition.

Each of the following:
  • A Prelude and Fugue or Toccata by J.S. Bach
  • Representative portions of a 17th- or 18th-century French dance suite
  • A composition from the early 17th-century Italian school or the English virginalist school
  • A composition of choice from any historic period (may include 20th-century works).

DMA
Applicants should prepare a program of not more than 40 minutes, which should include a major work of J.S. Bach, along with repertory drawn from each of the following:
  • The French literature of the 17 th and 18 th centuries
  • The English virginalists
  • Italian music of the 17 th century
  • A selection of the applicant’s choice from any historic period.
Memorization is encouraged, but not required. Applicants are also required to demonstrate skill in continuo realization.
Organ

Prescreening requirement: By December 1, all organ applicants must submit a preliminary audition recording (DVD is strongly preferred, though a videotape (VHS) is permissible. Please see the online application for more information on prescreening after the application goes live on September 1. The repertory for the prescreening DVD and the live audition in Rochester may be different or the same, but must include each of the following:

BM
Each of the following:

  • At least one work by Bach or another Baroque composer
  • Two selections by a Romantic or contemporary composer, one primarily lyrical and one primarily virtuosic

MM
Applicants should prepare a program of not more than 30 minutes, including a major work of J.S. Bach. Other works should be of contrasting styles and periods, and should include at least one lyrical and one virtuosic selection. Performance from memory is encouraged, but not required.

DMA
Applicants should prepare a program of not more than 40 minutes, including a major work of J.S. Bach. The program should reflect the applicant’s breadth of knowledge of the organ repertory, and their highest technical and musical achievements. Performance from memory is encouraged, but not required. If the applicant is skilled in improvisation, a five-minute improvisation may be part of the program.

Applied Majors
Prescreening requirement: By December 1, all undergraduate and graduate piano performance applicants seeking a live audition must submit a preliminary audition compact disc. The prescreening CD must be a minimum of 30 minutes in duration of solo music and include one virtuoso etude and at least two works representing different styles. Please see the online application for more information on prescreening. The following lists repertory requirements by degree for applicants invited to a live audition and those auditioning only by recording.

BM
Applicants must prepare an audition program to be performed from memory, including:
  • One virtuoso concert etude
  • A work by Bach that contains a fugue
  • A complete classical sonata by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, or Schubert
  • One Romantic work from the 19 th century
  • One work from the 20 th or 21 st century.

MM
Applicants must prepare a 45-minute audition program, to be performed from memory, including one virtuoso concert etude and at least three works representing contrasting styles.

DMA
Applicants must prepare a 60-minute audition program, to be performed from memory, including one virtuoso concert etude and at least three works representing contrasting styles. An audition in Rochester is required.

Student compositions and pieces in jazz or popular styles are not acceptable for the purpose of this audition. Applicants who apply in these majors and audition on piano are not compared to applied piano majors.

  • Timpani:  Beck Sonata for Timpani; Carter Eight Pieces for Solo Timpani; Firth The Solo Timpanist, Hochrianer Etuden fur Timpani

  • A movement of Bach from either the Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin or the Six Suites for Solo Cello. 2 mallet example preferred.
  • A 4-6 minute excerpt or movement from a contemporary solo Marimba work
  • Delecluse Etude No. 1, 3, 6 , 9 or 11 from the Douze Etudes
  • 2 contrasting orchestral excerpts on each of the following: snare drum, xylophone and timpani

 

MM, DMA Live Auditions in Rochester should include snare drum, timpani, and keyboard percussion. Suggested solo repertoire:

  • Snare Drum: Etudes from Delecluse, Macarez, Peters, Tompkins
  • Timpani: 3 contrasting orchestral excerpts and a solo or etude of your choice from Delecluse, Carter, Hochrainer, or the equivalent

Strings

Each of the following:

Guitar BM, MM
Prepared repertory should include three contrasting major works from different stylistic periods that best represent the applicant’s technical and artistic strengths.

DMA
Applicants should be prepared to perform, from memory, excerpts from a full-length solo recital program representing several contrasting style periods.

Applicants in jazz studies and contemporary media should refer to the section on jazz for additional requirements.

Harp BM
Each of the following:
  • Three contrasting works of the grade of difficulty of: Ibert, Réflets dans l’eau; Natra, Sonatina or Prayer; Handel-Grandjany, Prelude and Toccata
  • An etude selected from the Bach-Grandjany Etudes for Harp

MM
Each of the following:
  • An etude selected from Bach-Grandjany Etudes for Harp or Posse Eight Great Concert Etudes for Harp
  • Three works of contrasting style from the following periods: 20th-century French, contemporary, and Baroque or Classical period.

DMA
Applicants must prepare a 40-minute audition program, to be performed from memory, including works representing at least three contrasting style periods.
Lute MM, DMA
Audition repertory should consist of three contrasting pieces showing the candidate’s best technical and musical development.
Viola BM
Each of the following:
  • Three contrasting selections or major movements, which must be taken from three significant works representing different compositional periods. One of the selections must be by Bach.
  • One etude or technical study

MM
Each of the following:
  • A major concerto from the 20th century or contemporary repertory
  • A major work for solo viola or viola and piano
  • Two contrasting movements from a solo suite or sonata/partita of J.S. Bach

DMA

  • Two major works for viola and piano or solo viola, one written in the past 20 years

The prescreening DVD or CD must include an etude in addition to 10 or more minutes of a violin concerto (unaccompanied is preferred). BM
Each of the following:

  • A movement of a concerto from the standard repertory by a composer such as Mozart, Mendelssohn, or Bruch
  • Two contrasting movements from an unaccompanied Bach sonata or partita
  • An etude from one of the standard etude books, such as those of Kreutzer, Fiorillo, Rodé, or Dont
  • Three-octave major and minor scales and arpeggios

MM, DMA
Prepared repertory should include solo Bach, a complete concerto, and a Paganini caprice or its equivalent.
Violoncello Prescreening requirement: By December 1, all undergraduate and graduate cello applicants seeking a live audition must submit a preliminary audition recording. The prescreening CD must include 2 movements of an unaccompanied work by Bach and one movement from a standard concerto. Please see the online application for more information on prescreening. The following lists repertory requirements by degree for applicants invited to a live audition and those auditioning only by recording.

  • One movement of a standard concerto of moderate difficulty, such as Saint-Saëns, Lalo, or Romberg
  • Sonata movement or other work of personal musical interest
  • Two contrasting movements of a Bach suite
  • Two contrasting etudes (e.g., Popper numbers 6 and 8, or Duport numbers 1 and 7)

MM, DMA
Prepared repertory should include 3 contrasting movements of solo Bach, a complete concerto, and other works from the standard repertory.

Prescreening requirement: By December 1, all applicants in voice must submit a preliminary audition recording (CD or DVD acceptable) with the application. The guidelines given below apply to prescreening recordings and to those invited for a live audition - material submitted as part of the prescreening process may be performed at a live audition.

BM AMU
Three pieces in varying musical styles, in three different languages, one of which may be English. Non-native speakers of English must perform one piece in English.

MM PRL, DMA PRL
The required repertoire for all three graduate performance degrees is identical: Four pieces, with one of the four being an operatic aria, in at least three different languages, one of which may be English. Non-native speakers of English must perform one piece in English.

Voice -
Major in Opera
Performance
MM OPR
The MM in Opera Performance, is an advanced degree in Opera and is extremely limited in the number of students admitted each year. All applicants to the MM PRL and DMA PRL degree are automatically considered for the Opera Major. At the end of the audition season, the faculty will make recommendations to the Admissions Committee for candidates to the Opera major. All graduate vocal applicants are automatically considered for this Opera Major. Candidates have the same repertoire requirements for audition as the MM PRL and DMA candidates. Consult the Opera Form in the application for details about the Program.

If approved from prescreening, the live audition should follow the same repertoire guidelines, and can present the same or different material.

  • First movement of Mozart or either Weber Concerto (with piano if possible) and the Debussy Premiere Rhapsodie or other French concours solo (with piano if possible)
  • Unaccompanied Work: Choose either work listed below

    • Three Pieces for Clarinet Solo, Igor Stravinsky (movements 2 and 3 only)

Flute

Prescreening requirement: By December 1, all flute applicants seeking a live audition must submit a preliminary audition DVD. Please see the online application for more information on prescreening. The prescreening recording must include each of the following:

 

  • Mozart: First movement from D or G major concerto
  • Bach: 2 movements from a sonata of your choice
  • A solo piece of your choice

The following 4 standard orchestral excerpts (not the entire work):

Saxophone BM

Prescreening requirement: By December 1, all saxophone applicants seeking a live audition must submit a preliminary audition recording.  Please make a DVD of the following: Please record repertoire in the order listed.

If approved from prescreening, the live audition should follow the same repertoire guidelines, and can present the same or different material.

Examples of recommended repertory:

 

  • Any concerto or sonata from the standard repertory, such as Glazunov, Creston, or equivalent
  • Two etudes of contrasting tempo, such as Voxman, Ferling, or Karg-Elert
  • Possible sight-reading

MM
Prepared repertory may include standard and contemporary solo literature appropriate to training and experience. Possible sight-reading.

DMA
Prepared repertory should include three works representing contrasting styles. Applicants are encouraged to include one transcription of a work written before the 20 th century.

Applicants in jazz studies and contemporary media should refer to the section on jazz for additional requirements.

Woodwind

Entrance to this program requires two auditions, one on the primary instrument, and one on the second primary instrument. Applicants should follow the guidelines in this section according to their two instruments. (Note that instruments in the same family do not meet the requirements for this major; e.g., flute and piccolo, oboe and English horn, etc.)
