On March 4, 1922, the Eastman School of Music officially opened its doors to the community. On that date, all the main building’s floors had been completed, including the Main Hall (now Lowry Hall), the Cominsky Promenade, and the stunning Kilbourn Hall. A chamber music concert was given that evening to dedicate the concert space that has now heard thousands of performances ever since. Fast forward 100 years … From March 2 through 6, 2022, Eastman will offer a wide variety of performances as we celebrate our centennial.
Two of Eastman’s top jazz ensembles will kick off the Spring season with incredible performances, Eastman Jazz Lab Band and Eastman Jazz Workshop Ensemble perform March 2 at 7:30 p.m. in Kilbourn Hall. As the season continues there will be guest appearances by John Clayton, Carmen Bradford, Maria Schneider and more as well as world premieres of various works
The Beal Institute, under the direction of Associate Professor Mark Watters, presents “Visual Music 4.0: An Evening of World-Premiere Film and Music Collaborations,” Saturday, February 26, 2022, at 7:30 PM in Kilbourn Hall at the Eastman School of Music and this year’s presentation will feature the music of Eastman faculty and alumni.
The Eastman School of Music, of the University of Rochester, is proud to announce three major festivals, multiple national academic conferences, and several artists-in-residencies during its three-semester-long centennial celebration. Beginning in fall 2021 and continuing throughout 2022, Eastman will feature numerous performances by world-renowned artists—including composers, vocalists, instrumentalists, and quartets—both alongside student groups and as part of residencies, masterclasses, conferences, and festivals.
The William Warfield Scholarship Fund (WWSF) along with Thomas Warfield, The Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester, Rochester Institute of Technology, and the City of Rochester, are proud to announce a collaboration honoring William Warfield (’42, ’46MM, ’88 Honorary degree) with a Bronze sculpture and commemorative plaque.
In this centennial this year, we’re looking forward with exciting events, new music, and plans for the future. But it’s also important and often entertaining to look back. You can do this each week with This Week at Eastman – photos and a essay detailing events from a corresponding week in Eastman history, from building construction to important concerts, spanning the decades. Special Collections Librarian David Peter Coppen prepares and writes this series.
Eastman’s Morning Chamber Music Series announces three chamber music concerts for the 2021-2022 season. Each concert presents distinguished alumni who represent the rich diversity of the school, performing alongside current faculty and students. This series is directed by Eastman Assistant Professor of Violoncello, Rosemary Elliott.
The Eastman School of Music, of the University of Rochester, together with Garth Fagan Dance, are proud to announce A Collaborative Celebration: Eastman School of Music 100th Anniversary and Garth Fagan Dance 50th Anniversary, Friday, October 1, at 7:30 PM in Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre.
On Monday, September 13, at 7:30 p.m. in Kodak Hall, the Eastman Wind Ensemble (EWE), under its director Mark Davis Scatterday, will present the world premiere and centennial commission, of Allen Vizzutti’s (‘74, ‘76 MM) River of Light, and the world premiere of his work Quasar.
